The Stars and The Anchor

My Galapagos.  Part Five.
{this is the part where I write about writing}

***

   Last I wrote the chilly waves had rushed over me.  I didn't escape the discomfort immediately.  I stayed.  I waited.  The shock from the frigid water altered my lenses.  I stayed longer.  I waited some more.  I turned my back to the bleakness of the ocean and fixed my eyes on the sand.  Strings of colorful bulbs left glowing kisses on the shore.  The whispers of the stars outlined the tree tops.  I never would have noticed this light had I not jumped in and I wouldn't have been reminded of a lingering hope I had spent years trying to forget.

Give a book GIVEAWAY

   It's that time of year again- a time to spread love, to splurge on flowers, to indulge in sweets, and to appreciate the special ones in our lives.  I've been wanting to extend my gratitude with a giveaway for a while now.  And with Valentine's Day and International Book Giving Day falling on the same date, I chose today!

The Incredible Book Writing Boy

   If you're following me on twitter, facebook, and/or instagram, then you already know how excited I was on Sunday to meet The Incredible Book Writing Boy, Oliver Jeffers.  I noticed on his instagram Saturday that he was en route to Texas and immediately began researching where, if at all, he would be making a public appearance.  I was ecstatic when I found out he would be speaking at the Dallas Museum of Art yet immediately deflated as I realized it was sold out.  But that wasn't going to stop me.

Mommy, I want a hamster!

   The words we dread hearing as a parent, "You don't love me!", "They were mean to me at school", "Are you going to die?", and worst of all, "Mommy, I want a hamster!"  Now that my oldest is in Kindergarten, I miss most of her day's events.  She concentrates all day long, buttons her lip, minds her manners, and walks in line.  But the moment Little Girl shuts the door and before she can even buckle her seatbelt, her eyes are beaming in my rear-view mirror.  Her guard falls away and every heartbeat from the day pours out in a sprint of conversation.  I say conversation, but it's usually a monologue.  My heart breaks when she has had a rough day with a friend.  My cheeks hurt from the release of sensitive information she has acquired.  I soak it all up.  If I try and interrupt her or correct her behavior too soon, she completely shuts down.  I don't want to miss anything she wants to tell me, for fear that I might miss part of the girl she is becoming.  However, the part where she asked for a hamster...yeah, I could skip that.
